Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a common disorder with a high incidence rate in adults of 10 to 38%. Diagnosis and treatment of GERD are important because the disease, in addition to the problematic typical symptoms, has numerous known consequences. GERD can affect a patients' quality of life, decrease functional activity, and increase the risk of esophageal carcinoma.
A research article published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology has investigaged the prevalence of non-erosive reflux disease (or NERD) in China. The findings reported that of the 2231 recruited participants, 31% were diagnosed as having GERD, while 10% were NERD patients. The investigators concluded that old age, being male, having a moderate working burden, being divorced/widowed, and having heavy tea consumption remained significant independant risk factors for NERD.
GERD is a common disease of the GI tract with a high occurence rate in China. The most associated risk factors include sex, race and social characteristics. GERD symptoms can include cough, hoarseness, voice changes, chronic ear ache, burning chest pains, nausea or sinusitis. Complications for GERD include esophageal spasms, esophageal ulcers, Barrett's esophagus, and possibly esophageal cancer.
